The San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers

!

This page of mine--or something similar--has been up since 1994.  Sidewalk Astronomy came naturally to me:  I did not have a backyard!  And when I was first learning the constellations and what to point my telescope at within them, it was tremendous fun to share my excitement--and views--on the sidewalk!  Even with all the beautiful high-definition Hubble Space Telescope images that we have been blessed with, it is truly amazing and beautiful to look at 'real time' images through a humble home-made--or commercially made--telescope.  And it's amazing how much the sidewalk trekking public appreciate the views too!

And though I don't plop my scope out on a well traveled sidewalk as much as I used to, I still encourage others to do so:  Why be selfish? It's a great way to 'share your views and knowledge of the universe--not to mention your enthusiasm--especially if your temperament is at all outgoing. . .  There is still plenty to marvel at through a telescope even on a 'dark-challenged' sidewalk: The moon, the planets, star clusters, even  bright galaxies or nebulae. . . While folks are lined up at your scope, point out the constellations! The views are only the beginning. . .

This page will continue to have some "sidewalk-like" articles beneath its cover, but it will also be geared to the average astronomy-interested beginner, who may feel more comfortable (contemplative?) in their backyard.
